Microneedling

Controlled micro-injury that rebuilds collagen. What it fixes, what the "vampire facial" add-on really is, and realistic results.

Microneedling uses a device of fine needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering the body’s wound-healing response to produce new collagen and elastin. Over a series, it improves texture, acne scars, pores, and fine lines.

01

What microneedling is

Microneedling — clinically, collagen induction therapy — uses a pen or roller of very fine needles to make thousands of tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. Each micro-channel is a small, deliberate injury, and your body’s response to it is the entire point: it floods the area with growth factors and lays down fresh collagen and elastin as it heals.

The result, built over a series, is firmer skin with smoother texture, smaller-looking pores, softened acne scars, and a reduction in fine lines. It is one of the few treatments that genuinely improves the skin’s own structure rather than sitting on top of it.

02

How it works

After numbing cream sits for 20–30 minutes, the provider passes the device over the skin at a depth chosen for your concern — shallower for fine lines and general rejuvenation, deeper for acne scars. The micro-channels also let topical serums penetrate far more effectively than they would on intact skin.

A common add-on is PRP (platelet-rich plasma) — the so-called "vampire facial." Your blood is drawn, spun to concentrate your own platelets and growth factors, and that plasma is applied during or after the needling to amplify healing. It is legitimate, but it adds cost and is not mandatory for good results.

03

Typical 2026 cost

A standard microneedling session runs about $250–$500 in 2026. Adding PRP pushes it to roughly $500–$700 per session because of the blood draw and processing. Most clinics offer a package of three to six, which is how the treatment is actually meant to be done.

Skip the temptation to buy a cheap at-home derma-roller as a substitute. Home rollers cannot reach the depth needed to remodel collagen and, used incorrectly, mostly cause irritation and infection risk. The clinical value is in the depth, sterility, and technique.

04

Sessions, cadence, and downtime

Collagen takes time to build, so this is a series treatment: typically 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with acne scarring on the higher end. You will see surface glow within a week, but the structural improvement compounds over months as new collagen matures.

Downtime is short and predictable. Expect redness like a moderate sunburn for one to three days, sometimes mild flaking or tightness. Deeper treatments for scarring run on the longer end. Avoid sun, makeup, and active skincare (retinoids, acids) for the first 24–48 hours.

05

What to expect

Right after, your skin looks flushed and feels tight. Over the next days the redness fades and a subtle glow sets in. The real results — smoother texture, faded scars, refined pores — show up gradually across the series and the weeks after, not overnight.

Microneedling is not for everyone. Active acne breakouts, certain skin infections, a history of keloid scarring, or recent isotretinoin use are reasons to wait or skip it. A responsible provider screens for these before touching your skin.

06

Who should perform it

Medical microneedling should be done by a trained aesthetician, nurse, or other qualified provider in a clinical, sterile setting under medical oversight — especially anything involving PRP (a blood draw) or radiofrequency energy. Sterility and correct depth control are what separate a safe treatment from an infection or a scar.

Radiofrequency microneedling (such as Morpheus8) is a step up in both power and price and demands a more advanced operator; see our Morpheus8 guide if skin tightening is your main goal.

07

How to choose a provider

Ask whether they use a sealed, single-use needle cartridge for every patient (they should), how they tailor depth to your concern, and whether PRP is genuinely worth it for your case or just an upsell. Request before-and-after photos of their own work on skin like yours.

FAQ

Microneedling: common questions

How much does microneedling cost in 2026?

A standard microneedling session runs about $250–$500 in 2026. Adding PRP (the "vampire facial") raises it to roughly $500–$700 per session due to the blood draw and processing. Most clinics sell packages of three to six, which is how the treatment is meant to be done.

How many microneedling sessions do I need and how long is recovery?

Most people need 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with acne scarring on the higher end. Downtime is short: redness like a mild sunburn for one to three days, sometimes light flaking. Collagen results build gradually over the weeks and months after the series.

What does microneedling actually treat?

Microneedling improves skin texture, enlarged pores, acne scars, and early fine lines by triggering new collagen and elastin. It rebuilds the skin’s own structure rather than sitting on top of it, which is why results are gradual and require a series to develop.

Is at-home microneedling the same thing?

No. Home derma-rollers cannot reach the depth required to remodel collagen and carry real irritation and infection risk if misused. The clinical value comes from controlled depth, sterility, and technique — none of which a cheap home device can safely replicate.
